The absoluteBLACK Premium Oval Road Chainrings are designed for Shimano 110/4 BCD cranksets including Dura Ace R9100, Ultegra R8000 and 105 R7000, and can also be retrofitted to 9000 and 6800 cranks. Engineered for super fast shifting and exceptionally smooth pedalling, these chainrings are widely regarded as some of the most premium oval chainrings available. The optimised oval profile maximises the part of the pedal stroke where riders generate the most power while reducing resistance where less force is applied, resulting in smoother power delivery and improved pedalling efficiency. Compatible with 10, 11 and 12 speed drivetrains, they are available in 50T, 52T and 53T sizes in the distinctive Champagne or Rainbow finish.
Independent testing by the University of Primorska in Slovenia demonstrated measurable performance benefits when using absoluteBLACK oval chainrings. The study recorded up to 9 percent improvement in force effectiveness, 7 percent reduction in oxygen consumption, up to 15 percent lower respiration rate, and up to 10 percent reduction in heart rate. In practical terms, this allows riders to maintain the same power output for longer periods while using less effort, particularly noticeable during sustained climbs where oxygen levels fall and fatigue increases.
Unlike older oval designs such as Shimano Biopace, which used incorrect oval timing, absoluteBLACK chainrings feature precisely optimised ovalisation and clocking specific to each chainring size. This design complements human physiology, improving pedalling efficiency and helping smooth out imperfect pedal strokes. While often associated with professional racing, oval chainrings can offer even greater benefits for everyday riders by improving power delivery, reducing strain on the legs, and making long rides and climbs feel easier and more comfortable.
